I have overcome the world

Jesus told his disciples before he left them “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 kjv
There are times in our lives when we just wish we weren’t. When Jesus said “tribulation”, he wasn’t just talking to hear himself talk; he was telling the truth. In the U.S. we don’t get much physical triublation (yet). But we get broken hearts, broken lives and broken bodies. Heartaches that we can do little about. Circumstances that we did nothing to achieve. Reminds me of a poem that touched my heart:

Ballad of the Tempest

We were crowded in the cabin
not a soul would dare to sleep
It was midnight on the water
and storm was on the deep.

‘Tis a fearful thing in winter
To be shattered by the blast
And the hear the rattling trumpet
thunder”Cut away the mast”

So we shuddered there in silence
For the stoutest held their breath
While the hungry sea was roaring
And the breakers talked with death

As thus we sat in darkness
each one busy with their prayers
“We are lost!” the captain shouted
as he staggered down the stairs

Then his little daughter whispered
As she took his icy hand
Isn’t God upon the waters
Just the same as on the land?

Then we kissed the little maiden
and we spoke in better cheer
And we anchored in the harbor
where the morn was shining clear
James T. Fields

Sometimes it seems that all is lost, the ship is sinking and getting safe to harbor is beyond reach. It is in those times that I have, by faith, trusted in a still small voice that says “He is God upon the water as well as God upon the land. “Be of good Cheer” was spoken to those who would shortly be weeping tears without understanding. I’m so glad he finished the statement with
